Branching Out

For a few months now, I've been anxious to try my hand at crochet.  Over the summer, my aunt showed me how to single crochet and double crochet.  That was about it.  Last week, while on Ravelry I came across a granny square blanket pattern made for beginner crocheters by Revlie.  On the Ravelry page for the pattern, she described it as a pattern for beginners.  So, I decided to buy the pattern.  Once I opened the pdf, I noticed that it was like a little book.  Every step was accompanied by a picture.  After the instructions are given for the granny square, Revlie discusses color combinations and how to connect the squares.  As a visual learner, this pattern was a big help.  

So, Sunday I spent the day in bed reading over the pattern and brushing up on my crochet skills.  By that evening, I finished my first granny square.  I used some fingering weight yarn I had in my stash.  Although Revlie  gives directions on how to connect the squares as you go, I decided to finish the square and block it when done.  At this point, I'm not sure what I want to make with the squares.  Maybe I'll make a blanket or scarf.

• The Harmony Guides: Basic Crochet Stitches by Erika Knight
• Teach Yourself Visually Crochet (2nd Edition)  by Cecily Keim and Kim P. Werker
• Ultimate Crochet Bible by Jane Crowfoot

All of these are great resources, along with Revlies pattern.  I don't know what was holding me back from learning how to crochet, but now that I've started, I'm hooked.
